the twist
At the beginning there was a little sketch of a woman twisting at the waist and looking over her shoulder. I liked the curve that formed her body...
Some time later, I was planning to make a larger wooden sculpture as part of a seminar. The sculptor who was leading the course asked me to make a drawing so that the appropriate proportions for the wooden block could be produced.
By remembering the woman, I realised that I would like to create a wooden sculpture of her swinging body.
...the way into wood
The block of wood became massive – so I could – and had to – really go into full swing to find the rough shape of the sculpture.
It was only when I had them that I slowed my pace and thought twice about where I was going to continue to 'peel' the block of wood! ;-)
Over time, I realised that I wanted to show the power and dynamism of the figure through the traces of my tools - and so they became an important part of my sculpture...
